Disney Plus Showcases Most Popular Movies In Throwbacks Week

Nostalgia is big on Disney+this week. As a lead-up to the streamer’s original series “Prop Culture,” Disney+ is showcasing fan favorites from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s It’s what the streamer dubs the Disney+ Throwbacks Week.

The titles cover a wide range of genres. A sampling includes “Star Wars: A New Hope” and “The Muppet Movie” in the 1970s to “Honey I Shrunk The Kings” and “The Little Mermaid” in the 1980s. Beloved shows from the 1990s include “Toy Story” and “Lion King,” while the 2000s are represented by “Kim Possible” and “Hannah Montana.”

Some of the franchises, such as “Star Wars,” were the highest-grossing films in the U.S. in the last five decades. (“Star Wars: The New Hope” grossed $323 million in 1977, while “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” grossed $474 million in 1999.) The animated “Lion King” grossed $968 million in 1994, and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” pocketed $423 million in the 2000s.

The 1988 “Who Killed Roger Rabbit” is especially noteworthy and a film no movie lover should miss. The four-time Oscar-winner delivered a truly impressive visual feat — and a cinema first — combining animated characters with live action actors. So considerable ws its artistry, it earned a Special Achievement Award Oscar for exceptional contributions to the industry.

Mel Blanc, often called “The Man of a Thousand Voices,” voiced several “Roger” characters, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety and Sylvester.
All this is a prelude to the May 1 debut of “Prop Culture,” in which Dan Lanigan, a film historian and prop collector, celebrates some of the most iconic Disney movie props and the people who created them. Films such as “Mary Poppins” and “Tron” are featured.
