REPORT: Apple Looking to Bundle Apple TV+, Apple Music and Apple News+ in 2020

Though the streaming wars may be cooling off till next year with the launches of Apple TV+ and Disney+ now behind us, it doesn’t mean they’re over for the time being. The race to garner the most subscribers is still hot as Apple is reportedly looking into bundling Apple TV+, Apple Music and Apple News+ beginning next year.

According to Bloomberg, Apple has begun to set provisions in deals with publishers that allow the tech giant to bundle News+ with other paid digital offerings. Apple News+, which launched in March, gives access to publications such as GQ, Forbes, and The New Yorker for $10 a month. Apple keeps approximately half of the monthly subscription price, while magazines and newspapers keep the other half. If Apple bundles Apple News+ with Apple TV+ and Apple Music, publishers would get less money because the cost of the news service would likely be reduced, sources told Bloomberg.

Bundling services for Apple seems to be a continuously complicated feat. In October, the Financial Times reported that the company had been met with some resistance after approaching music labels about bundling Apple Music with Apple TV+.

Though Apple would continue to license music rights from record labels, it owns all content on Apple TV+ and won’t have to split its revenue. Music labels were reportedly apprehensive because if the tech giant were to offer Apple Music at a lower price, their bottom line would suffer, FT reported. The company wound up offering Apple TV+ to Apple Music subscribers on the student plan — which is also $4.99 — at no additional charge.

Currently, publishers are already complaining that the revenue they’re receiving from Apple News+ is lower than expected, though it’s unclear whether this is because News+ has a few subscribers or their content is simply not being read.
