Report: Apple’s Amazon Prime Video Channels Competitor Won’t Have Netflix, Hulu, or HBO

According to a report from CNBC, Apple has had difficulty getting major streaming players on board with their Amazon Channels competitor. The service, which is supposed to launch in April will combine Apple’s original content, as well as the ability to subscribe to third-party services.

The report shared that Netflix and Hulu aren’t expected to be available, and it’s not likely HBO will either. HBO hasn’t been able to reach revenue sharing terms with the tech giant for HBO NOW. Apple is trying to get a 30% cut on streaming video services — which is similar to what many peg as Amazon’s take for Prime Video Channels. Currently, through the App Store, Apple earns 15% of subscription revenue (after taking 30% during the first year) for services like HBO NOW.

It is expected that STARZ, CBS All Access, Showtime, and Viacom will offer streaming services at launch. Apple plans to mix original programming with ability to subscribe to other services.

The company has partnered with A24 who produced films like Lady Bird and Moonlight to make films for the service and announced a multi-year deal for original shows from Oprah. They have quietly acquired programming including a J.J. Abrams limited series starring Jennifer Garner, Steven Spielberg’s Amazing Stories, a futuristic drama from Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence, and thriller series from M. Night Shyamalan.

Apple has actively tried to expand their reach ahead of the launch. They’ve partnered with Samsung, LG, and VIZIO to add AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to their 2018 & 2019 Smart TVs. Samsung also plans to add an iTunes Movies and TV Shows App.
