HBO Max Orders ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’ TV Series

HBO Max plans to transform the “National Lampoon’s Vacation” films into a TV show. “The Griswolds,” based on the wacky comedy franchise, will focus on the family’s life in the Chicago suburbs.

Johnny Galecki (“The Big Bang Theory”) who played son Russ Griswold in the third film, will be the executive producer. Tim Hobert (“Scrubs,” “The Middle”) is on board as writer.

The original “National Lampoon’s Vacation” began in 1983 and starred Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo. The box office hit earned $61.4 million and subsequently birthed four sequels, all detailing insane road trips taken by the hapless Griswolds.

“The Griswolds” is slated to launch in May, but HBO Max has other scripted series in development, including reboots of “Adventure Time” and “Gossip Girl.” Another “Big Bang” alumnus, Kaley Cuoco, will star in the drama “The Flight Attendant.” An animated prequel series to the “Gremlins” films received a 10-episode order, too. In addition, HBO Max will feature all seasons of “The Big Bang Theory.”
