Hulu and MGM Set to Develop ‘The Testaments’, A Sequel to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

Hulu and MGM are partnering up to produce the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, Time reports. The new project, based on Margaret Atwood’s new book The Testaments, will be developed for the big screen instead.

The new book, which comes out Sept. 10, takes place 15 years after the ambiguous ending of The Handmaid’s Tale, which saw the main character, Offred boarding a van that would take her to an unknown fate. While the writers for The Handmaid’s Tale have mostly stuck to the the novel’s narrative, they have had to continue writing beyond Atwood’s story as the show has been greenlit for season four.

The Testaments will give perspective into the other three women connected to the Gilead, Time reports. Instead of telling the story from Offred’s perspective alone, we’ll get a chance to delve into the minds of the other three women, including Aunt Lydia, who’s been a villain in both the book and the series.

Bruce Miller, showrunner for The Handmaid’s Tale, is involved in the development of the new material. As of today, it’s unclear whether The Testaments will be a part of the current Hulu series or it’s own movie or show.
