Plex Will Soon Offer Premium Subscriptions and Free Movies

Media software company Plex, a service that aims to give users access to all of their photos, TV shows, movies, and other media collections in one place, is in discussion with content providers to bring movies to the platform.

In the current plan, these movies would be free and supported by ads, following the model of the Roku Channel. They are also considering offering subscriptions to premium networks through Plex, similar to Amazon Prime Video Channels.

This discussion comes after Plex’s recent partnership with Tidal, offering Plex users $1 per month off the usual $9.99 Tidal subscription. Plex started working on bundled packages as a result of their partnership with Tidal, which they see naturally leading to selling other subscriptions.

These other deals aren’t ready to go live yet. Plex is still figuring out exactly what offerings should be bundled together and how pricing should work. Expect to see new deals from them throughout 2019.

Plex continues to try to position itself as a one stop shop for all your media consumption, with web shows, podcasts, and personalized news, along with a place to organize all the other media you own and consume. Their hope is to offer recommendations that other platforms can’t, like suggesting a certain podcast based on your TV preferences.
