Netflix loves Steve Blackman. The showrunner for “Umbrella Academy” has earned a mega-exclusive deal with the streamer, according to The Wrap.
Netflix has signed Blackman to a four-year overall partnership, which The Wrap says is worth “around $50 million.”
Blackman’s production company, Borderline Entertainment, is expected to write-produce shows for the streamer, while he remains as showrunner-executive producer for “The Umbrella Academy.” Production on season two of “The Umbrella Academy” has begun.
The streamer also announced Ritu Arya, Yusuf Gatewood and Marin Ireland would join “Umbrella Academy” as regulars. The second season will debut his year.
The series is an adaptation of the Dark Horse Comics series by Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Bá.
Blackman, who works in various genres, was involved with acclaimed broadcast shows, such as “Private Practice” and “NYPD Blue,” as well as writing the FX cable hit “Fargo,” which now airs on Hulu.
Brian Wright, vice president of YA/Family original series for Netflix, said Blackman’s work on “The Umbrella Academy” helped “propel the series’ worldwide fandom.”
Earlier this week, Netflix announced it has teamed with six Japanese creators to develop original anime shows.
Netflix claims more than 167 million paid memberships in 190-plus countries.
