ViacomCBS to Launch Showtime-Paramount+ Bundle This Month

ViacomCBS is quite pleased with its current streaming structure that pairs three streaming levels for customers. According to ViacomCBS Executive Vice President and CFO Naveen Chopra, speaking at a Bank of America Securities conference on Tuesday, the company has no plans to merge its Showtime premium streaming service with its Paramount+ streaming service.

“We’ve sort of built our streaming strategy around the notion of a streaming ecosystem that has a free, pay and premium component to it,” Chopra said, referring to the company’s three primary streaming products — Pluto TV, Paramount+, and Showtime.

Chopra said the strategy gives the company the opportunity to cross-pollinate between the three services, while at the same time serving the broadest base of potential consumers.

“We’ve got a Paramount Plus-Showtime bundle that we’ll be launching later this month,” he said. “I think we found interesting ways to create value out of that ecosystem by sampling; by doing promotions; by creating bundles across those different services.”

In late July, there were concerns that a long-standing Paramount Plus-Showtime bundle for consumers accessing the products through Apple TV Channels was going away. However, this was not the case. That deal remains in place for existing subscribers, but is not open to new sign-ups.

The deal allowed Apple TV+ subscribers ($4.99 a month) to receive Paramount+ Ad-Free ($9.99) and Showtime ($10.99) for just $9.99 a month. If you already get Apple TV+, this was an incredible discount on the services.

For everyone else, ViacomCBS offers a $3 discount for Paramount+ subscribers to add Showtime to their existing ad-supported ($13.99 total) and ad-free ($18.99) plans.

Chopra did not give details regarding the new deal — only mentioning that it would be launched before the end of September.

“We really like what we can do from a marketing and an acquisition perspective with that portfolio,” Chopra said, referring to the three streaming platforms. “Having all three services does unlock incremental value.”

  • Pluto TV

Pluto TV is a free live TV streaming service that provides more than 350 channels of live TV and thousands of on demand movies and TV shows.

Most of what you’ll find on Pluto TV qualifies as “background television.” It’s fine to keep on while you’re scrolling on your phone or cooking something in the kitchen.

Because these aren’t traditional live TV channels, it’s not a great option for live events, news, or sports, but it’s a solid choice for cord cutters who want to supplement their other services with some “comfort food” TV. You’ll find channels dedicated to “Star Trek,” “CSI,” “Jersey Shore,” “Survivor,” and “The Amazing Race.”

  • Paramount Plus

Paramount+ is a subscription video streaming service that includes on-demand access to 40,000+ TV show episodes from BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and more. The lineup includes “1883,” “Tulsa King,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants,” and “PAW Patrol.” Subscribers can watch the NFL, college football, The Masters, college basketball, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa, Serie A, and NWSL. The service also offers the option to watch your live CBS affiliate. The upgraded ad-free package includes premium movies and shows from Showtime.

Subscribers can choose between the Essential Plan (which includes ads) for $5.99/month, or go commercial-free and add more movies with Paramount+ with SHOWTIME for $11.99/month.

Subscribers to the more expensive plan will also get access to your local CBS affiliate to stream your local news, prime-time lineup, and late-night. You will also be able to download offline and watch select shows in 4K.

With the lower-cost “Essential” plan, you will still be able to watch live NFL games, Champions League, and national news – but you will no longer get your local CBS affiliate.

With their new app, enjoy advanced recommendations, curated homepages, and new content categories while still being able to stream major live sports like NFL, College Football, College Basketball. Sports fans will also appreciate the service’s inclusion of NFL on CBS, PGA Tour, along with every match of UEFA Champions League and Serie A.

The service was previously called CBS All Access.
