Xumo, Comcast’s free, ad-supported streaming service, has launched an Ad-Free Movie of the Week. Users can now access a commercial-free, on-demand title each week. The schedule is as follows:
- October 4-10: Miss Stevens
- October 11-17: Hero
- October 25-31: We Need To Talk About Kevin
In addition, to celebrate Halloween, Xumo users can stream Marrowbone without commercials now through October 24. Xumo’s Ad-Free Movie of the Week will continue in November and December, but the selected titles have yet to be announced.
Xumo Play
Xumo Play is a free video streaming service that includes on-demand access to several movies and TV shows. Xumo Play offers 290 free virtual channels, including those focused on reality TV, vintage TV, and game shows.
“As an AVOD industry first, we’re excited to bring Xumo’s Ad-Free Movie of the Week to millions of users across all of our Xumo owned and operated properties,” noted Fern Feistel, senior VP of content operations and marketing at Xumo. “Not only are we delighting our audience, this is already proven to be a significant driver of retention as we continue to test new experiences.”
In August, Xumo tested ad-free movies with Comcast Xfinity X1 users, and it proved to be successful. Viewers used Xumo for more sessions and more often. This gave viewers a “more enjoyable streaming experience,” the company revealed to NextTV.
This is a first for ad-supported streaming services, according to Xumo. While the streaming service provides hours of free entertainment to 24 million unique users, all of its content, until now, has included commercials. Users can tune in to 200 digital channels of free programming, including genres to cater to everyone’s interests.
Recent reports have shown that consumers don't mind ads, especially when they can stream shows and movies for cheap or free. However, based on Xumo’s testing with ad-free movies, viewers aren’t going to turn down an opportunity to watch ad-free content at no cost.
