Apple TV Plus Renews Jason Sudeikis’ ‘Ted Lasso,’ Reese Witherspoon to Produce Country Music Show
Apple TV+’s quirky soccer comedy “Ted Lasso,” starring and executive produced by Jason Sudeikis, has been renewed for a second season.
The 10-episode second season will launch in 2021.
The series, which premiered August 14, features a cheerful college football coach from Kansas tasked with transforming a professional soccer team in England. The catch: He knows nothing about the game.
NBC Sports first featured the Ted Lasso character in 2013 to promote English Premier League games.
Apple TV’s formula is to stream the first three episodes together, then release weekly episodes thereafter.
Separately, Apple TV+ announced Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine company will produce the streamer’s first competition show, “My Kind of Country.”
“My Kind of Country” promises to look for “unconventional and extraordinary” country-music stars worldwide. The musical director, Adam Blackstone, has worked with Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.
The musical reality show is Witherspoon’s third production for the streamer. The other two are “The Morning Show,” in which she stars, and “Truth Be Told,” which stars Octavia Spencer as a true-crime podcaster. “Truth” earned a second season order in the spring.
