Hulu’s “Love, Victor,” the spin-off series about a gay 17-year-old, has moved up its launch date to today.
The 10-episode first season of “Love, Victor” coincides with Pride Month. The series is based on the 2018 film “Love, Simon,” which was directed by Greg Berlanti, best known for writing-producing “Dawson’s Creek,” “Everwood” and “Riverdale.”
Originally slated for June 19, the move was due to Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of U.S. slavery. Hulu stated: “This date represents an important turning point for our nation and for human rights, and we believe that now, more than ever, it deserves to have its own day in the spotlight.”
June 19, 1865 is a key date in American history. President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation became official January 1, 1863 — but there were insufficient Union troops to enforce the law throughout the South. However, on June 19, 1895, Union Gen. Granger landed in Galveston, Texas, a far outreach of the Confederacy, and announced the war had ended and slaves were free.
“Love, Victor” was moved from Disney+ to Hulu, given its subject matter: sex and alcohol use among teens. (Family-friendly Disney owns a majority stake in Hulu.)
Hulu will also move up the air date of “Taste the Nation” to June 18. In the show, Padma Lakshmi, the award-winning cookbook author and “Top Chef” host, explores the diverse food cultures of U.S. immigrant groups that have helped defined American cuisine. She will visit 10 different cities — kick-starting each episode with one dish, a family recipe, and detail the dish’s genesis in that specific community.
“Taste” is part of the upcoming food-focused Hulu Kitchen.
