Amazon Expands Free Streaming Local News Coverage to 158 Cities With News on Fire TV App

Amazon has announced that its News on Fire TV app is expanding live and on-demand local news from 88 to 158 major cities across the United States. Charleston, Wichita, Tucson, Reno, Raleigh-Durham, Honolulu, and Lincoln are among the cities that will get coverage for the first time.

The app is adding local content from broadcasters that include Hearst Television, Gray Television, Graham Media Group, Sunbeam Television, and Capitol Broadcasting Company. The number of local stations included in the app will double from 126 to 259.

“We’ve heard from our customers how important it is to stay informed on what’s happening in their communities and we’re proud that Amazon’s news app on Fire TV now covers over 90% of U.S. TV households,” said Charlotte Maines, Director of Amazon Fire TV in a statement. “With this expansion, Fire TV customers now have access to more stations across the US and we continue to invest in our local news coverage with 50 metros now offering more than one local news source.” 

Viewers can access local news for their city through the Local News tab in the Amazon News app. The app will automatically detect the closest metro area and add the local news station or stations within the tab. Customers can also access the app by saying “Alexa, play local news” into the included Alexa Voice Remote, or from across the room hands-free with the Amazon Fire TV Omni Series.

The News by Fire TV app comes pre-installed on all Fire TV streaming media players and smart TVs in the US. When you open the app for the first time, you are able to select the news that you are most interested in from a variety of local and national news sources. A custom playlist will be generated based on your selections.

This includes the new Amazon Fire TV 4K Stick Max that recently went on sale.

The new local news channels became available on Wednesday, Oct. 20. This is in addition to the national news sources already available on the Amazon News app: ABC News Live, Bloomberg TV+, Black News Channel, CBS News, CBS Sports HQ, Court TV, Estrella News, People TV, USA Today, and more. The expansion follows an initial 12-city launch last year and an expansion to 88 cities in March.
