With HBO MAX Coming, AT&T Targets 50 Million HBO Subscribers By 2025, From 35 Million Today

With so much attention surrounding the upcoming launch of HBO Max, questions have risen as to whether or not the WarnerMedia owned service will be able to compete in such a saturated space with Netflix, Hulu and Amazon still dominating and without a clear distinction from the HBO brand, which is generally not family-oriented .

According to The Information, WarnerMedia is expecting to garner 50 million subscribers, including HBO’s 35 million subscribers, within the next five years, in order to remain competitive. The goal for the company is not necessarily have the biggest share in the market, but to be one of the top services consumers turn to for content once the dust settles on all the streaming services coming out.

Back in June, WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey told CNBC, “Media has moved into an environment where scale is essential. Somebody in the legacy media space will build a platform of scale and get to 70 million to 80 million subscribers. We’d like it to be us. If you keep the cultures separate, you’ll never get the benefits the three together [HBO, Warner Bros. and Turner] bring.”

With legacy programming such as Friends and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air coming to HBO Max, as well as the catalog of HBO programming, it is expected that the service will attract a hefty number of viewers. However, even if the service meets its quota of 50 million subscribers, it still has a long way to go.

Back in July, Netflix reported their U.S. paid subscribers to over 60 million. Globally, the streaming giant boasts a whopping 150 million subscribers — 100 million more than HBO currently projects in the next 5 years.
