Netflix is renewing teen comedy “Never Have I Ever” for a second 10-episode season two months after the series premiered, Deadline reported Wednesday.
The coming-of-age story – from co-creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher – centers around Devi Vishwakumar, a first-generation Indian American teenage girl. Following the death of her father and three months spent in a wheelchair. Devi encounters many of the issues and questions that come with being a high school student.
The show shot to the top of Netflix’s popularity charts around the world after its debut and garnered widespread critical acclaim.
Vishwakumar is played by newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who will return for season two, as will Poorna Jagannathan, Richa Moorjani, Jaren Lewison, Darren Barnet, Lee Rodriguez and Ramona Young. Ramakrishnan, 18, famously beat out 15,000 hopefuls for the role, which is her first paid acting gig.
Kaling executive produces the series along with 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein and David Miner. Fisher is also an executive producer, as well as writer and showrunner.
“Never Have I Ever” is produced by Universal Television in association with 3 Arts Entertainment, Original Langster and Kaling International.
In April, Netflix announced it reached 182.86 million global subscribers in its Q1 2020 report. The company added 15.77 million subscribers since its Q4 2019 earnings report back in January, when Netflix reported that it reached 167.09 million global subscribers with 61 million in the U.S.
In May, a study by market research company The NPD Group revealed the streaming giant’s average weekly usage rose 72 percent since stay-at-home mandates went into effect amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
