Obamas Are Top Speakers at YouTube’s ‘Class of 2020’ Virtual Commencement

The pandemic has meant high school and college seniors won’t have official graduation ceremonies. So YouTube Originals stepped in to help.

On June 6, former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama top the bill at the streamer’s “Dear Class of 2020,” a virtual commencement that salutes grads worldwide. Each will deliver a speech. Michelle Obama’s Higher Reach Initiative will also supply an hour of content, reports Deadline

“Dear Class of 2020” can be streamed on the YouTube Originals channel and the [email protected] site.
Additional commencement speakers include former Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, CEO of Alphabet-Google Sundar Pichai, as well as Lady Gaga and BTS.

Musicians and actors appearing include Alicia Keys, Kelly Rowland and Kerry Washington and YouTube creator Jackie Aina, among others.

“We hope bringing together noteworthy, influential speakers along with performances from some of their favorite artists will provide encouragement for the students who have worked so hard to get here,” said Susanne Daniels, global head of content for YouTube.

YouTube is partnering with Higher Reach, Born This Way Foundation, Malala Fund, TODAY and Ideas United to highlight student stories worldwide. The special will be produced by Done + Dusted.

The full schedule of commencement events will be available on the [email protected] site beginning May 17.
