Apple Officially Retires iTunes, Announces New Apple TV App for Mac With Support for Apple TV Channels, 4K, Dolby Atmos & Vision

At their Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) today, Apple officially retired iTunes as part of their announcement of their latest operating system macOS 10.15 Catalina. Instead, the features will be spread across three apps — Apple TV, Apple Podcast, and Apple Music.

With the update, you can now sync your iOS devices directly from the Finder — meaning iTunes won’t automatically pop-up when you plug in your iPhone or Tablet.

Apple TV App

The new Apple TV app now supports 4K HDR with Dolby Vision and Atmos support. You can access all your previously purchased iTunes movies and TV shows, as well as Apple TV Channel subscriptions like HBO, Showtime, and more.

The app has many similar features to the app on tvOS including Watch Now and the ability to buy/rent the latest movies and TV shows.

Apple Music

The update will include a new Apple Music app which lets you access all previous downloads and stream from your Apple Music subscriptions.

Apple Podcasts

For the first time, you will be able to access Podcasts easily on the Mac. You can see feature Podcasts or use deep search to find content inside of episodes.
