CBS All Access Ramps Up On Original Content, Adds CW’s ‘Nancy Drew’ To Roster

The streaming space is about get heavily saturated beginning in the fall. With NBCU, HBO Max, Disney+, and Apple TV+ all set to launch starting this fall, competition is going to be rife as Amazon, Netflix and Hulu still maintain a formidable presence in the space.

With all the hype surrounding new services, CBS All Access is not one to fall by the wayside. The subscription OTT service is also ramping up its content to compete with the rest. The streaming service is increasing its original content slate to 12 shows in 2020 and is aiming to not only maintain its current subscribers, but to also grow and garner new watchers.

The service will be venturing into the original content arena, offering sports (World Series of Poker bracelet events), documentaries (Console Wars chronicling the battle between Nintendo and Sega) and other nonfiction projects. The service also ordered The Man Who Fell to Earth, a series based on the Walter Tevis novel and the 1976 movie starring David Bowie.

CBS All Access will also be welcoming CW’s Nancy Drew to its platform, as its has landed past-season streaming rights to the show. Nancy Drew is part of the first crop of new CW series, along with Batwoman and Katy Keene, whose full seasons will not be going to Netflix after completing their runs on the CW. CBS and Warner Bros. decided not to renew their output deal with Netflix when it expired this past spring.

Earlier this year, CBS announced that CBS All Access and Showtime have garnered a combined total of eight million subscribers. CBS All Access saw a 60 percent subscriber growth year over year in the 2018 fourth quarter, and CBS Corp. projects they will have a combined 25 million subscribers by the end of 2022.

Though Nancy Drew, is catered more towards young adults and doesn’t necessarily fit into CBS All Access’ usual adult-oriented demographic, it seems to be the perfect show for the service to try and garner new watchers. According to Deadline, CBS All Access’ median age is 44, similar to that of the CW viewers. Nancy Drew, however, could be a test case: If CBS All Access subscribers take to the show, the streamer may start developing more young-adult original series.

Nancy Drew and The Man Who Fell to Earth join a host of CBS All Access original content including The Twilight Zone, The Good Fight as well as the upcoming, 10-episode season of Star Trek: Picard, which sees Sir Patrick Stewart reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard.
