About Cake

This season of Cake looks to mix things up a bit. The short-form anthology comedy series will more heavily feature animation, reports indicate, coming from three sources in particular.

First, Reza Farazmand’s webcomic “Poorly Drawn Lines” will feature prominently throughout season five. “Poorly Drawn Lines” follows three friends — Ernesto, Kevin, and Tanya — who discover that the broader world is a lot more bizarre, overall, than they’re used to. It’s even stranger when you’re just starting out in it.

Second, Branson Reese’s webcomic “Swan Boy” will also have a big piece of this season’s time. “Swan Boy” follows the tale of a half-man, half-swan in his early 20s. As you’d expect from such a bizarre character, his life will be full of trouble that he’ll need to navigate successfully for the sake of his own survival.

Finally, season 5 will also play host to an intermingling of short subjects. From Dan Britt and Alex Plapinger’s animated “Beings” to live-action series “Words With Ike” and “The Dream.” Look for plenty of bizarre introspection and plain old ridiculous situations to emerge throughout.

Steve Anderson got his start writing about direct to video movies almost 15 years ago. This was back in a time when video stores were a part of everyday life, as opposed to being roadside attractions like gator farms or the Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota. With that writing on the wall in huge day-glo capital letters and probably moving neon, Steve migrated to streaming, which was clearly the future of home entertainment. Steve has been an enthusiastic proponent of the home theater for years, however, and seeing streaming's growth has proven gratifying as a way to fill the video store's shoes.
