The pandemic may have stalled a lot of things, but it couldn’t stop one of the most popular cult events in the year — Shark Week. The annual programming, designated specifically for the thalassophiles around the world, is making its way back to Discovery Channel. Shows kick off on Sunday, Aug. 9, with “Air Jaws: Ultimate Breach Off,” at 8 p.m. ET.

This year’s Shark Week will be no different than fans expect. The show took to the seas of Australia, South Africa and New Zealand and will bring a slew of programming filled with “brand-new, innovative shark research technology and compelling insight on some of the most unique shark species in the world,” Discovery stated. The week will see appearances from stars such as Mike Tyson, Will Smith and Shaquille O’Neal.
Shark Week 2020 will be the the 32nd installment of the famed franchise. This year will feature 24 specials studying the mystifying ocean giants. “Air Jaws: Ultimate Breach Off” will be followed by “Tyson vs. Jaws: Rumble on the Reef” and “Shark Lockdown” will close out the night.
“Discovery Channel continues to work with nearly two dozen of the world’s most respected marine biologists and science institutions to bring brand-new, innovative shark research technology and compelling insight on some of the most unique shark species in the world,” the company stated in a Newsweek story. “Shark Week 2020 will take viewers to New Zealand, Australia and South Africa to see how the global lockdown and reduced amount of human activity on the seas has given sharks the opportunity to reclaim the oceans.”
