Closing arguments from the House began on Monday and lasted four hours. Senators Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Amy Klobuchar and Michael Bennet, who are all running for president, also got their say before traveling for the Iowa caucuses.
While the House says Trump is guilty of abusing the power of the presidency — betraying his oath of office, U.S. national security and the integrity of the country’s elections — the president’s lawyers have argued otherwise. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been quite vocal, dubbing the impeachment as “the most rushed, least fair and least thorough” trial in history, according to The Associated Press. He has confirmed he will vote to to acquit his fellow Republican.
The Senate is currently expected to acquit Trump after refuting a motion to hear witness testimony last week. “Other Republicans, such as Sens. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Marco Rubio of Florida and Rob Portman of Ohio, also say Trump’s actions to withhold military aid from Ukraine while pressing Zelenskiy to announce an investigation into Biden and his son Hunter were inappropriate, but fell short of warranting his removal from office, especially in an election year,” The Associated Press reported.
