Hulu and Neon Reportedly Shell Out $22 Million for Andy Samberg’s ‘Palm Springs’
The global rights to Andy Samberg’s comedy “Palm Springs,” sold at the Sundance Film Festival, is said to be closer to “$22 million, reports Deadline. That’s versus the initial report — that Hulu and Neon shelled out $17.5 million. It’s the biggest deal ever at Sundance.
Documentaries are also super popular at the festival this year.
HBO Max bought “On the Record,” Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering’s documentary that focuses on the women who accused hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons of sexual assault and rape. The film explores how women of color are silenced or ignored when it comes to sexual misconduct allegations.
“The fierce determination of Drew Dixon and all of the women who bravely chose to share their stories in ‘On the Record’ moved us profoundly,” stated Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max, which debuts in May.
No price was disclosed for the “On Record.”
Netflix is said to be finalizing a seven-figure deal for “The 40-Year-Old Version,” the Radha Blank-directed autobiographical comedy. Blank has also written “The Get Down” and “She’s Gotta Have It” for Netflix.
Amazon purchased two movies: “Uncle Frank” written-directed by Alan Ball (“American Beauty”) for a reported $12 million and “Herself,” directed by Phyllida Lloyd (“The Iron Lady,” “Mamma Mia!”).
Deep-pocket streamers will continue to have a strong, ongoing presence at Sundance, often surpassing theatrical distributors that don’t have a major parent company behind them.
