Luke Evans to Star in True-Crime Drama on BritBox, Amazon to Develop ‘The Inheritance Games’

“Alienist” star Luke Evans takes the lead in a true-crime drama on BritBox called “The Pembrokeshire Murders,” which focuses on historic cold cases in a large Welsh town. The SVOD service will co-produce with ITV; they will handle U.S. and Canadian rights to the three-part series.

Evans plays real-life detective Steve Wilkins. In 2006, he reopened two murder cases from the 1980s. The show is based on the book “The Pembrokeshire Murders: Catching the Bullseye Killer,” written by Wilkins and ITV news journalist Jonathan Hill. Filming began in January.

“With a strong cast and suspenseful writing, ‘The Pembrokeshire Murders’ is a perfect combination of classic crime drama and modern storytelling that is a perfect fit for BritBox,” stated president-CEO Soumya Sriraman.

The show joins BritBox’s slate of originals, which includes “Mum” starring Lesley Manville, “There She Goes” starring David Tennant, “The Bletcley Circle: San Francisco” and upcoming crime shows “The Mallorca Files” and “Sister Boniface,” about a nun who uses advanced techniques to track down killers. “Boniface” is created by Jude Tindall; his “Father Brown” series is currently on Netflix.

While BritBox explores crime, Amazon Prime Video is moving into the YA world. The streamer is developing “The Inheritance Games,” a new series based on an upcoming YA novel by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, the first of two.

The book, which will be published in October, is about a billionaire who dies and leaves his fortune to a teenage girl he’s never met. But to claim her inheritance, she has to move into his mansion, filled with secret-passages, and live with the family he’s disinherited.

Josh Berman’s studio Osprey Productions and Sony TV landed the rights to the book; he will co-produced the adaptation. Berman also has “The Gordita Chronicles,” a coming-of-age comedy set at HBO Max. And he’s secured two shows with Quibi, a modern adaptation of “Turn of the Screw,” an 1898 horror novella by Henry James, and “Murder House Flip.”

Jennifer Salke, who heads Amazon Studio, has made enlarging the YA market one of her company goals.

Separately, Amazon Studios is teaming with Nicole Kidman’s production company for an original film “My Lovely Wife,” based on Samantha Downing’s bestselling crime thriller.
