Mulan Is Coming to Disney Plus, But It Won’t Be Included in Your Subscription

On their Q3 Earnings Call, Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced that Disney’s “Mulan,” which was originally supposed to be released on March 9, but delayed due to COVID-19 will be coming Disney+. The film will be released on Disney+ on September 4, but it won’t be included in your subscription.

Instead, the film will be released as a premium on-demand offering for $29.99. The company didn’t say how long those who purchase it would have access to that film.

Most PVOD movies released to-date has been $19.99 for a 48-hour rental, with some offering a purchase option for $24.99.

During the company’s earning call, Chapek said that this is a “one-off”, but that they are interested to see how it helps drive consumers to the platform.

“Rather than simply rolling it into a free offering. We thought we’d try a new window to recapture some of the investment we got.” When asked around their research behind this, Chapek said that it shows that it “not only gets us revenue from the original transaction, but acts a stimulus for subscribers to Disney+.”

Amid theater closures, some major production companies opted to take their new films to PVOD immediately upon release and found success. Universal, for example, released “Trolls World Tour” on-demand for $19.99 in April and amassed over $100 million in the first three weeks it was available.

Just last week, AMC and Universal reached a deal to allow films to become available on premium video-on demand just 17 days after it hit theaters.

Most movies theaters are still shut down, but Disney will release the film in theaters in some markets.
