NBC Affiliate Board Urges NBCU to Reconsider Pre-Streaming of Late Night Shows on Peacock

During their investor meeting last month NBC Universal announced that one of the perks that will come with Peacock premium will be the pre-streaming of late night shows, “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night With Seth Meyers.” Currently airing on NBC at 11:35 p.m. and 12:35 p.m. respectively, the shows would stream at 8 and 9 p.m. on Peacock.

Now, according to Variety, it seems the NBC Affiliate Board wants the company to reconsider the move, since its more about giving a leg up to Peacock and not necessarily about convenience, which is one of the main purposes of streaming. NBC Affiliate networks also stand to lose some revenue if users are able to watch them before they air on the network.

However, Variety reports NBC Universal has taken the Affiliate Board’s concerns into consideration as a source told them, “Affiliates ‘will participate’ in any success NBCUniversal has with streaming the shows earlier on Peacock.”

In a statement obtained by TV News Check, Pat LaPlatney, Gray Television Co-CEO and NBC Affiliate Board Chairman, said, “The NBC Affiliate Board has had productive dialogue regarding Peacock and are working toward a plan that is good for NBCU and provides affiliates the opportunity to meaningfully participate in this business. The NBC affiliate body has had a very positive 70-year relationship with the network, and are in continual dialogue with the NBC on this matter and other elements of the network-affiliate partnership.”

Peacock will debut nationally in the U.S. on July 15, 2020. Comcast’s Xfinity X1 and Flex customers will get access to Peacock earlier on April 15, 2020. Peacock will have three different tiers — Peacock Free, which offers 7,500 hours of programming and will be free to everyone. Then there’s Peacock Premium with 15,000 hours of programming. If you’re a Comcast/Xfinity customer, you can access Peacock Premium for free, while other viewers can get it for $4.99 a month. Customers can upgrade to an ad-free tier of Peacock Premium for $9.99 a month.
