NBC Has Officially Launched NBC News Now, Their Free News Streaming Network For Cord-Cutters

At the SXSW conference earlier this year, NBC News President Noah Oppenheim said that they would be launching a streaming news network called NBC News Now in May. Today, the network officially launches with their first telecast starting at 3pm ET. To start, NBC News Now will stream 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, with plans to expand to 24 hours a day in the coming months.

The service will include original reporting for the streaming service, as well as content from other NBC News properties including E! News and NBC Sports. For breaking news, the service will leverage NBC News to break in with live programming. It can be streamed from the NBC News App on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, iOS, Android, and at nbcnews.com/now

This follows CBS and ABC which launched CBSN and ABC News Live in November 2014 and May 2018 respectively, and upstart Cheddar which was recently acquired by Altice for $200mm. The trend to launch free ad-supported news networks comes in the face of cord-cutting, which was also the motive for Bloomberg who launched their national news network TicToc on Twitter in 2017.

CBS has been the most aggressive in trying to reach cord cutters through free streaming networks. Besides CBSN, the company has also launched CBS Sports HQ for sports fan and ET Live for entertainment junkies. The company has also lead the trend in a focus on local news. In December, CBS launched CBSN New York, and expect to expand to Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco this year. Sinclair Media Group has also launched local news through their affiliates on their free streaming service STIRR.
