Plex Launching Free Streaming Service, With Warner Bros. As First Content Partner

Plex—a streaming app that allows users to stream movies, TV shows, news, web shows, podcasts, music, live and recorded television, and personal media —announced today that it has signed an agreement with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution for the rights to a package of feature films available to users in the United States.

The agreement will allow U.S.-based users to access a package of library feature film titles from Warner Bros., in addition to already available content like live and recorded over-the-air television, trustworthy news, popular web shows, podcasts, and over 60 million HiFi streaming music tracks.

“Plex has always been about solving new media challenges, and our mission is to tame the growing chaos in the media landscape,” said Keith Valory, CEO of Plex. “Licensing these movies from Warner Bros. enables us to offer more types of third-party content than any other platform and bring it all together in one beautiful solution. Premium ad-supported movies and shows deserve first-class treatment alongside other content that consumers enjoy daily, as opposed to being orphaned in yet another stand-alone app.”

The deal with Warner Bros. allows Plex to compete with other streaming services such as Tubi. In January, Tubi announced that hey had secured $25m in growth capital to build out their content catalog. Weeks later, they announced that they inked a deal with NBCUniversal to bring 400 classic TV shows and films to the platform. The deal brought shows such as Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, The A-Team, and many more to Tubi.

Just yesterday, Tubi announced it’s going international, because starting Sept. 1, customers in Australia can enjoy the largest free library in the country with an initial offering of nearly 7,000 movies and television series. At launch, streamers will be able to watch 3:10 to Yuma, The Blair Witch Project, Kickboxer, and Stranger Than Fiction. In the next six months, films like Dirty Dancing, The Grudge, Requiem for a Dream, Reservoir Dogs, Saw, Traffic and Young Guns will join the service.

Plex is available on all major devices, including, Android, iOS and Roku.
