Sling TV Passed 2.4 Million Subscribers at End of 2018, Still Largest Live TV Streaming Service Despite Slow Growth

Dish Network announced their 2018 4th Quarter results today, and shared that Sling TV added 47,000 net subscribers this quarter.

The company shared that while Sling TV has reached 2.417 million subscribers, the service only added 47,000 net subscribers this quarter. While this improved from the previous two quarters, as a whole, Sling TV only grew 8% in 2018.

The user growth has likely slowed as a result of increased competition from services like Hulu Live TV and YouTube TV, the price increase of Sling Orange to $25, and the loss of channels like Univision, El Rey, and ABC.

Sling TV is no longer able to offset a large decline in Dish satellite subscribers. The company lost more than 1.1 million satellite subscribers this year. The company is currently in multiple carriage disputes including with Univision and HBO.

Sling TV is still the largest vMVPD with 2.42 million subscribers, ahead of DIRECTV NOW who reported 1.59 million subscribers just a few weeks ago. AT&T TV NOW saw huge subscribe losses after killing promotions, losing 267,000 subscribers in the quarter.

Hulu Live TV announced in September that they had reached 1 million subscribers, while speculation places YouTube TV at around the same amount, PlayStation Vue at 400,000, and fuboTV at 250,000.
