Nonstick Frying Pans: FAQs

What is nonstick coating?

Nonstick coatings are added to traditional stainless steel and aluminum pans to allow for healthier cooking by using lower heat and requiring less oil or fat while cooking. These surfaces are often created using using PTFE coatings, however we’ve outlined alternatives, including ceramic coatings as well as PFOA-free PTFE surfaces in our overview page.

Will high heat make my food cook faster?

No. Nonstick cookware has been designed to work at lower heat than traditional cookware. In fact, using high heat can damage the coating on your nonstick cookware. You should never heat your pan above the recommended maximum temperature rating.

Will the nonstick coating make me sick if it somehow gets into my food?

No. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has deemed nonstick surfaces to be “food contact” safe. Also, due to the nature of nonstick coatings being “inert,” if surface particles were somehow swallowed, there is no danger because it would likely pass through the body causing no harm.

Can I use nonstick spray with my pans?

No. Using nonstick spray will leave residue that will actually reduce the nonstick properties of the coating as it heats up. Also, using nonstick spray can void your warranty on your nonstick cookware.

Can I use metal utensils on my stainless or nonstick cookware?

It depends. While using silicone, plastic, or wood on nonstick surfaces is preferred, pans such as the Scanpan Classic are designed to be used with metal utensils. Unless a pan manufacturer says otherwise, it’s best to use silicon, plastic, or wood utensils.

Can I use nonstick pans on an induction stovetop?

It depends. Not all pans are compatible with an induction stovetop. The following pans can be used on an induction stovetop.
