ABC, Freeform and Disney Channel to Air ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ Ahead of Disney+ Premiere to Launch Streaming Service

Disney+ is trying to get fans hooked on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series before it even gets to the streamer. The reboot is set to air on ABC, Freeform, and Disney Channel on Friday, Nov. 8 before it debuts with the service on Nov. 12.

The scripted series is a mockumentary following a group of students attending the real school where Disney Channel filmed the High School Musical trilogy. When their drama teacher discovers that the school has never actually staged a performance of the musical, she’s “shocked, inspired and triggered,” and immediately holds auditions.

Disney+ is not the first streaming service to move its content to its corresponding TV station. Back in May, CBS added The Good Fight, the streaming spin-off of former hit CBS show The Good Wife, to their summer line-up. The first season of the series, which originally premiered on CBS All Access in Feb. 2017, aired on CBS starting on Sunday, June 16th. CBS then aired two episodes on back-to-back Sunday evenings, with the remaining six episodes airing at 10pm ET the subsequent weeks.

Disney+ will launch on Nov. 12 at $6.99 per month, or $70 per year ($5.83/month). The first year will include 25 new original series, 10+ movies, 7,500 past episodes, 100 recent movies, and 400 library titles. By 2024, the company expects to have 50+ new original series, 10+ movies, ~10,000 past episodes, 120+ recent movies, and 500+ library titles.
