British Streaming Service BritBox to Compete With Netflix, Amazon and Apple TV+

The number of players coming into the streaming wars continues to grow as BritBox, a British streaming service that offers the biggest streaming collection of British TV, aims to take on Netflix, Amazon and Apple TV+. The streaming service, which is a joint venture between BBC and ITV, is “positioning itself as the home of the widest library of British shows, old and new,” according to The Guardian.

At $6.99 a month, BritBox is more expensive than Apple TV+, which goes for $4.99, but remains cheaper than Netflix at $8.99 and Amazon Prime Video membership at $8.99.

“For the first time all the UK’s public service broadcasters have joined forces to take part in the fast-paced streaming market,” Reemah Sakaan, the group director for ITV SVOD, told The Guardian. “We’ve got ambitious plans for BritBox. We are realistic and confident about establishing a scale business and, unlike some of these streaming ventures, we intend for this to be profitable.”

BritBox is offering a variety of U.K. shows — Downton Abbey, Gavin & Stacey and Wolf Hall to Broadchurch, Brideshead Revisited, Blackadder as well as 600 episodes of Doctor Who. Broadcaster Channel 4 will add more than 1,000 hours of its TV and film content to the service come spring, but it’s unclear whether their hit show, The Great British Bake Off, will be available, since the show’s producers have a separate streaming deal with Netflix.

Subscribers can access BritBox via Amazon Prime Video Channels.
