Disney Plus to Create Series Based on Best-Selling ‘Percy Jackson’ Books

The best-selling book series “Percy Jackson” is being developed by Disney+.

Author Rick Riordan announced the news via Twitter.

Riordan was short on details, but stated he and his wife are “very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with ‘The Lightning Thief’ in season one.”

Percy Jackson, which is a popular fantasy-adventure series for kids, is no stranger to the screen. The first two books in the series — “Lighting Thief” and “Sea of Monsters” — were made into films by 20th Century Fox, which is now owned by Disney.

Percy is notable for being part god, part human; he’s the son of the mythological Greek god Poseidon, who rules the sea. “The Lightning Thief” was also made into an off-Broadway musical.

More than 69 million copies of the books have been sold in over 35 countries.

Disney+ also announced today it would debut the film Clouds, about teen musician Zach Sobiech, this fall.
