Netflix is on a demographic roll, just surpassing YouTube as the video platform most preferred by U.S. teens. A Piper Sandler research survey found Gen Zers spent 33 percent of daily video consumption at the streamer.
Per its last earnings report in January 2020, Netflix reports 167 million subscribers globally with 61 million in the U.S.
Piper Sandler surveyed 5,200 people in the U.S. with an average age of 16.2 years old across 41 states for its spring 2020 teen survey.
Netflix’s closest rival, YouTube, accounted for 31 percent of Gen Zers daily video consumption — that’s down from 37 percent last fall.
Much farther down the list, Disney+ and Apple TV+, both of which launched in November 2019, recorded only 7 percent and 2 percent, respectively.
Hulu showed a slight uptick, rising to 8 percent, from 7 percent last fall. Amazon Prime Video captured only 3 percent of the demo and Facebook Watch just 1 percent.
Separately, Netflix announced that Lisa Kudrow (“Friends”) is joining its upcoming series “Space Force,” slated for a May 29 debut. The workplace comedy is from two “Office” alums: Steve Carell, who played Michael, and the series’ co-creator Greg Daniels. The plot revolves around staffers creating Space Force, another branch of the armed services.
