HBO Sports Books 2-Part Tiger Woods Documentary on Golf Legend’s Rise, Fall and Return

HBO Sports has a new two-part documentary in the works on golf legend Tiger Woods. “TIGER” will be available on both HBO and HBO Max, with part one coming Dec. 13 and part two Dec. 20.

“Using Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian’s best-selling book Tiger Woods as a resource, the two-part series is driven by never-before-seen footage and revealing interviews with those who know Tiger best, including his former caddy and close friend, Steve Williams; golf legend and six-time major champion Sir Nick Faldo; Earl Woods’ friend and biographer, Pete McDaniel; Tiger’s first true love, Dina Parr; as well as Rachel Uchitel, the woman at the center of the sex scandal that forever altered Tiger’s world, breaking her silence for the first time,” HBO said.

Oscar-winner Alex Gibney (“Taxi to the Dark Side”) executive produces alongside Sam Pollard, Stacey Offman, Richard Perello, Armen Keteyian and Jeff Benedict. Oscar nominee and Emmy-winning filmmaker Matthew Heineman (“Cartel Land,” “A Private War”) and Emmy nominee Matthew Hamachek (“Amanda Knox”) direct.

“Since his introduction to the world at the age of two, Tiger Woods has inhabited our collective consciousness as a prodigy, a pioneer, a champion, a global icon, and then a tabloid headline,” directors Heineman and Hamachek said. “After months of research and countless hours of revelatory conversations, we discovered that he has always been a projection of outsized expectations. His father, his sponsors, and his fans all made Tiger Woods into whom they wanted him to be. Our goal was to dive deeper and create an unflinching and intimate portrait of a man, who like all of us, is imperfect and inherently human.”

“TIGER” is produced by Jigsaw Productions in association with Our Time Projects.

HBO Sports has had many successes over the years: Since 1991, it has earned 138 Sports Emmy Awards and has been recognized with four duPont-Columbia University awards for excellence in broadcast journalism. The 2019 Sports Emmy Awards saw HBO win its eighth title for Outstanding Long Sports Documentary, this time for “Momentum Generation.”

Last month, HBO announced it acquired the North American rights to the documentary “The Weight of Gold” – which explores the mental health challenges Olympians face – and will also stream it on HBO Max July 29. Twenty-three-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps narrates and executive produces.

HBO Max debuted on May 27 with the promise of an expanded library as compared to HBO, along with a slate of original television and film programming. The app has separate hubs for content like HBO, DC, Sesame Workshop, Studio Ghibli, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, CrunchyRoll and Turner Classic Movies.
