NVIDIA SHIELD Gets Major Update With Android P (9.0), Support for Hulu + Live TV, & 4K Cast Support

After weeks of speculation that Android Pie (9.0) would be coming to NVIDIA SHIELD — the device has finally gotten the latest Android TV OS in SHIELD Experience 8.0. Android P brings quick settings and easier set-up for new users.

Additionally, SHIELD Experience 8.0 includes an update to the Hulu App (which was announced yesterday), which includes support for Hulu Live TV. Other streaming apps that will receive updates are Netflix, which now delivers Dolby Digital Plus 5.1, and Amazon Prime Video, which you can now Cast to in 4K.

  • Updates “Display and Sounds” advanced setting into two easier to navigate menus.
  • Adds option to match content color space (Settings > Display & Sound > Advanced).
  • Improves volume dynamic range for USB and bluetooth connected headsets.
  • SHIELD TV remote app adds bluetooth assist for pairing and improves connection.
  • Enables 720p refresh rate switching on supported apps.
  • Adds “Disconnect Bluetooth accessories” option to quick settings.
  • Adds IR power control options to customize on/off functionality.
  • Adds option to turn off USB power when SHIELD sleeps.
  • Adds option to connect to 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi network with shared SSID.

The NVIDIA SHIELD is one of the most updated Android devices, which had it’s 20th software upgrade in September 2018 since it launched 4 years ago. The NVIDIA SHIELD was updated to Android Oreo (8.0) back in June of 2018.

Many like the device for its ease of extensibility with external storage, as well as the support to use it as a Plex hub without the need of a separate computer. The Android TV device is already one of the favorite media streaming player’s by cord-cutters, but has been using the same Tegra X1 chip since 2015. There have been rumors of an updated model coming soon.
