Report: Disney Is Spending Up To $25M Per Episode On New Marvel Shows for Disney+

Disney is prepared to spend as much as $150 million per season on a new slate of exclusive Marvel superhero shows coming to the company’s forthcoming streaming service, Disney+, Variety reports, citing unnamed sources.

Disney is reportedly budgeting $100 million to $150 million per season for new shows featuring Marvel Cinematic Universe characters Loki, Winter Soldier, Vision, Scarlet Witch, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight. With seasons lasting anywhere from six to eight episodes, Disney could be spending between $12.5 million and $25 million per episode—among the most expensive episodes of television in history.

This isn’t the only set of shows that Disney is spending big money on. Disney reportedly has spent $100 million on the 10-episode Star Wars Disney+ spin-off, “The Mandalorian” which was directed by Jon Favreau.

By comparison, the final season of Game of Thrones was reportedly the most expensive season of television ever produced, with HBO paying an estimated $15 million per episode, Variety reported at the time. Disney is apparently eager to produce exclusive superhero shows on Disney+ that look like feature films.

Internally, Disney is reportedly shifting the responsibility for producing new Marvel shows for Disney+ away from its Marvel Television unit, which cranked out 136 episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for ABC, produced Legion for FX and the now-canceled Netflix shows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher.

Instead, the studio’s new, marquee Marvel shows will reportedly fall under Marvel Studios, which produces feature films, Variety reports. For the immediate future, the Marvel Television team will focus on four animated shows for Hulu: Howard the Duck, MODOK, Hit-Monkey and Tiara the Dazzler.

Disney+ is scheduled to launch in the U.S. on Nov. 12 for $6.99 per month. Disney says it will offer 25 new original series, more than 10 movies, 7,500 past episodes of television shows, and hundreds of Disney movies, including the entire Disney Vault.
