Sling TV Adds 214,000 Subscribers to Reach Nearly 2.7 Million Subs

Dish Network announced their 2019 third-quarter results today and said that Sling TV added 214,000 net subscribers this quarter. The live TV streaming service now has 2.686 million subscribers, up from 2.47 million at the end of the second quarter.

Sling TV is still likely the largest vMVPD, ahead of Hulu Live TV, which has surpassed 2 million subscribers, according to Bloomberg. Sling TV also continued to build its lead over AT&T TV NOW, which lost 195,000 subscribers in the third quarter. YouTube TV has never disclosed subscribers, but reports place over 1 million and fuboTV at 300,000. PlayStation Vue, which has about 500,000 subscribers, will shut down live streaming services in January.

Sling TV has been actively trying to recruit customers leaving services due to rising prices. Besides adding Discovery channels in December, Sling TV has been discounting the service to just $15 a month (40%) for new subscribers since mid-March. While some of this is reflected in the current user numbers, the promotion will continue to see the impact over the rest of the year.

The big challenge going forward for Sling TV has come as Dish has been in carriage disputes with Fox Sports RSNs and NBC Sports Chicago, which affect the attractiveness of their Sling Blue plan. While some of that will have already impact Q3 results, with NBA and NHL season underway, the bigger impact won’t come until the fourth quarter.
