The Roku Channel Adds 17 New Linear Channels to Their Free Streaming Service

Over the course of the year, The Roku Channel, the free streaming service available on Roku and mobile devices, has been adding new linear channels to their lineup. Today, the company announced that they had added 17 new channels to the service covering sports, comedy, reality, news, and more.

Some of those include CollegeHumor, Funny or Die, and Nosey, which bring classic reality shows including Maury Povich, Jerry Springer, Blind Date.

In February, Roku’s CEO Anthony Wood said that he thought the growth of AVOD is important to Roku’s future:

“We are the original, original in terms of bullishness on AVOD both in terms of its value to consumers and its importance in the OTT business model. We see AVOD growing pretty nicely on our Platform and clearly a growing recognition in the industry as the importance of AVOD.”

As The Roku Channel adds more linear content, they’ve more directly competed with ad-supported apps like Viacom’s Pluto TV, Sinclair’s STIRR, Amazon’s IMDB Freedive, and independents Tubi and XUMO.
