These Disney+ dramas are made for a weekend binge

From ‘Andor’ to ‘Once Upon a Time,’ these finished shows are ready when you need a real binge.

These are the best dramas to binge on Disney+ right now.

I think Disney+ is easy to underrate as a drama binge streamer because people mostly think of the big brands first. You know, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, animated classics, all that. But if you’re looking for a show you can actually sink into for a while, the drama lineup is sneakier than it gets credit for. And the key here is complete — no waiting around for Season 2, no wondering if a cliffhanger is ever going to pay off, no getting attached to a world that disappears before it’s finished. These four shows all scratch a different drama itch, but they’ve got the thing every great binge needs: big worlds, characters you want to follow, and storylines that keep you hitting “next episode.” Here are my picks for the best binge-worthy drama TV shows streaming on Disney+ right now.

Best binge-worthy drama shows streaming on Disney+

Best prestige binge: ‘Andor’

“Andor” is the “Star Wars” show for people like me, who want a little less lightsaber swinging and a lot more political dread. Set five years before “Rogue One,” it follows Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna, before he becomes the rebel spy we meet in the movie. At the start, Cassian isn’t some polished hero ready to save the galaxy. He’s angry, slippery, exhausted, and mostly trying to survive. But that’s what makes the show work so well. You’re watching a regular person get pulled, step by step, into something much bigger than himself.

What makes “Andor” such a great binge is how tightly it builds. The show works almost like a series of mini-thrillers, with each arc slowly tightening until everything snaps. And the cast is ridiculous. Diego Luna gives Cassian this guarded, wounded energy, Genevieve O’Reilly makes Mon Mothma’s quiet panic fascinating, and Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael might be one of the best characters Star Wars has ever put on TV. It’s dark, smart, and stressful in the best way. If you want a drama binge that actually asks you to lock in, this is the one.

Andor

In an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue, Cassian Andor will discover the difference he can make in the struggle against the tyrannical Galactic Empire. He embarks on a path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.

Best fantasy binge: ‘Once Upon a Time’

You can’t say “Once Upon a Time” isn’t imaginative. Emma Swan, played by Jennifer Morrison, is living a pretty normal life until the son she gave up for adoption shows up and tells her she’s actually the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. Also, the town he lives in, Storybrooke, Maine, is full of fairy-tale characters who don’t remember who they really are because of a curse. I mean, come on. That’s a pilot setup that basically dares you not to keep watching.

The binge appeal here is the puzzle-box of it all. Every character has a secret past, every flashback changes how you see the present, and every new fairy-tale figure opens another door. One minute you’re watching small-town drama, the next you’re in the Enchanted Forest dealing with magic, romance, betrayal, pirates, queens, curses, or whatever Rumplestiltskin is up to that week. Lana Parrilla’s Regina is the big reason the show has so much juice, because her villain-to-hero arc gives the whole thing real weight. Robert Carlyle is also having an absolute blast as Rumplestiltskin. With seven seasons and 156 episodes, this is the kind of binge you don’t casually sample.

Once Upon a Time

October 23, 2011

There is a town in Maine where every story book character you’ve ever known is trapped between two worlds, victims of a powerful curse. Only one knows the truth and only one can break the spell.

Best superhero binge: ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” starts as a pretty straightforward Marvel spy show and then slowly turns into something way bigger, weirder, and more fun. Clark Gregg returns as Phil Coulson, who is secretly back after the events of “The Avengers,” and he pulls together a team to investigate strange threats around the world. At first, it has that case-of-the-week feel, with gadgets, missions, banter, and mysterious superpowered problems. Then the show starts folding in Hydra, Inhumans, aliens, androids, virtual reality, time travel, Ghost Rider, and honestly, about five other things that sound like they shouldn’t fit together but somehow do.

That’s why it works so well as a binge — the show keeps reinventing itself without losing the team at the center. Coulson is the steady emotional anchor, Ming-Na Wen’s May is the tough, quietly wounded badass, Chloe Bennet’s Daisy becomes more important with every season, and Fitz and Simmons turn into one of the show’s biggest emotional engines. Once the longer arcs kick in, it becomes very hard to stop. At 136 episodes, it’s a commitment, but it’s the good kind where the characters slowly become your people.

Agent Phil Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division) puts together a team of agents to investigate the new, the strange and the unknown around the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary.

Best animated binge: ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’

“Star Wars: The Clone Wars” might be animated, but don’t let that trick you into thinking it’s lightweight. Set between “Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones” and “Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith,” the series turns the Clone Wars into a full-on war drama. Anakin, Obi-Wan, Yoda, the clone troopers, Darth Maul, Mandalore, the Jedi Council, all of it gets more room to breathe. But the real gift of the show is Ahsoka Tano, who starts as Anakin’s Padawan and grows into one of the best characters in the whole Star Wars universe.

As a binge, this one sneaks up on you because the episodes are short. You think you’re just watching a couple, and then suddenly you’re deep into a three-episode arc about clone identity, Jedi failure, political corruption, or Anakin’s slow slide toward darkness. The show works especially well when you watch the arcs together, because they feel like little movies. Some are pure adventure, some are surprisingly heavy and some make the prequels hit harder retroactively. And by the time you get to the final stretch, especially the Siege of Mandalore, the whole thing starts feeling massive. It’s fun, emotional, and way more dramatic than people who skipped it because it’s animated probably realize.
