From ‘True Detective’ to ‘The White Lotus,’ Max means mystery
From ‘True Detective’ to ‘The White Lotus,’ Max means mystery
Gritty investigations and glamorous getaways; these are the must-watch murder mysteries on Max.
Murder mystery shows are one of my favorite genres because they turn TV watching into an active experience. You’re not just sitting back - you’re piecing together clues, reading between the lines, and sometimes even solving the case before the characters do. It’s one of the few genres that fully engages your brain while keeping you entertained. And when it comes to the best streamer for murder mysteries, Max takes the crown. Whether you’re into gritty, slow-burn crime dramas that dig deep into the dark side of humanity or lighter, more comedic whodunits that mix laughs with mystery, Max has it all. Here’s why I think it’s the ultimate destination for murder mystery fans.
Everything you need to know about the best streamer for murder mystery TV shows
What gritty murder mystery TV series can you watch on Max?

One of the biggest reasons Max is the best streamer for murder mysteries is that it’s home to some of the most gripping crime dramas ever made. And there’s no better place to start than with “True Detective.” This anthology series has been delivering dark, twisting investigations since 2014, but in my opinion, the latest season, “True Detective: Night Country,” is the strongest yet.
Starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, this season dials up the tension with an eerie, frozen Alaskan setting and a case that’s as unsettling as it is mysterious. The performances from Foster and Reis elevate the show to another level, bringing emotional weight and grit to a chilling murder investigation that unravels deep secrets. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the series or jumping in for the first time, “Night Country” proves that “True Detective” is still the gold standard for prestige crime drama.
No list of gritty murder mystery TV shows is complete without mentioning “The Wire.” Widely considered one of the best TV shows ever made, this series isn’t just about crime—it’s about an entire city. Set in Baltimore, “The Wire” explores the drug trade, law enforcement, politics, and media through an unflinching, realistic lens. Each season shifts focus, peeling back new layers of corruption and systemic failure while delivering some of the most complex characters and sharpest storytelling in TV history. From McNulty and Bunk to Omar Little and Stringer Bell, the show’s ensemble cast brings an unmatched level of depth and authenticity. If you haven’t seen it yet, now’s the time—this is peak television at its finest.
If you’re looking for a murder mystery that’s as gritty as it is emotional, “Mare of Easttown” is a must-watch. Kate Winslet is phenomenal in the lead role, playing a small-town Pennsylvania detective trying to solve a brutal murder while dealing with the wreckage of her personal life. I’m not even sure I ever imagined Winslet in a role like this, but she completely disappears into it, giving one of the most raw, grounded performances of her career. The show nails its sense of place, with an atmosphere so authentic you can practically feel the weight of the town’s secrets. Plus, Evan Peters has one of the best “drunk character” acting scenes I’ve ever seen, and the show has an ending that seriously shocked my wife and I. Add it to your list.

For a slower burn than most of the other shows on this list, “The Staircase” is a fascinating deep dive into one of the most infamous true crime cases ever. Based on the real-life trial of Michael Peterson, a novelist accused of murdering his wife, this series blurs the line between fact and fiction, meticulously reconstructing the events leading up to her mysterious death. Because it’s based on a true story, the pacing is more methodical, letting the drama unfold in a way that feels eerily real. What really makes it stand out, though, are the performances—Colin Firth and Toni Collette are incredible in the lead roles, bringing an emotional depth that keeps you hooked even when you think you already know the outcome. If you love murder mysteries that focus on character psychology just as much as the crime itself, this one is a must-watch.

I’ve read all of Gillian Flynn’s books, and “Sharp Objects” is one of my favorites—so I was thrilled when the TV adaptation actually did it justice. This creepy, slow-burn murder mystery follows a journalist (played brilliantly by Amy Adams) who returns to her hometown to cover a series of brutal murders, only to get pulled back into her own traumatic past. The show nails the unsettling, oppressive atmosphere of Flynn’s novel without ever leaning too far into outright horror - it’s creepy, but not scary, which is exactly how I like it. Adams is phenomenal, delivering a performance that feels raw, damaged, and completely believable, and the storytelling unravels at a great pace, keeping you hooked as the truth slowly comes into focus. If you’re into psychological thrillers with a dark, unsettling edge, “Sharp Objects” is worth a look.
Finally, for a twisty, stylish murder mystery, featuring the queen of stylish murder mysteries herself (Nicole Kidman of course), “The Undoing” needs to be on your list. Kidman and Hugh Grant star in this gripping psychological thriller about a therapist whose world is turned upside down when her husband becomes the prime suspect in a murder case. The show drips with tension, unraveling secrets and lies with each episode, and keeps you guessing until the very end. Kidman is fantastic as always, and Hugh Grant delivers one of his best performances, bringing charm and menace in equal measure. The setting - New York’s elite private school scene - adds an extra layer of intrigue, making the mystery feel even juicier. It’s the perfect mix of suspense, high-stakes drama, and psychological twists - exactly what you want from a binge-worthy murder mystery.

This brilliant series is routinely cited as the best TV show ever made. (Entertainment Weekly, The BBC, The Telegraph, The Guardian, and Salon.com have all ranked it #1.) It is the closest thing we have to a novel on television. Sprawling narratives, unforgettable characters, and jaw-dropping plot twists combine into something remarkable, unique, and definitively American. From the police to the drug dealers to the junkies to blue-collar workers to politicians to journalists to elementary students, all the pieces matter.

What light murder mystery TV shows can you watch on Max?

Now, the other big reason Max is my choice for the best murder mystery streamer is because it’s got arguably the best light murder mystery TV show (I say arguably because “Only Murders in the Building” is a serious contender) out right now in “The White Lotus.” I absolutely love this show - not just for its juicy, slow-burn mysteries, but also for the sheer opulence of the locations. Who doesn’t want to escape to a gorgeous tropical resort (or a luxurious Italian villa) for an hour? But beyond the stunning settings, it’s the deeply flawed, hilarious, and painfully real characters that make it so addictive. Every season introduces a new set of rich, clueless vacationers whose privilege and bad decisions slowly unravel in the most biting, satirical, and darkly funny ways. The writing is always sharp, but since everyone’s rich, it’s totally okay to laugh at their misfortunes. With the first episode of Season 3 just dropping this week, now is the perfect time to dive in.
If you’re looking for a fast-paced, darkly funny murder mystery, “The Flight Attendant” is a wild ride - at least for the first season. Kaley Cuoco is perfect in the lead role, playing a chaotic but lovable flight attendant who wakes up next to a dead man and has no idea what happened. This role is right in Cuoco’s sweet spot, blending her natural comedic timing with just the right amount of frazzled, crime-solving energy - very similar to her role in “Based on a True Story.” The first season is sharp, stylish, and genuinely gripping, balancing mystery, humor, and emotional depth in a way that keeps you hooked. While the second season doesn’t quite hit the same high, that first season alone makes this show worth watching.
Finally, if you’ve watched everything else on this list and are looking for more, it’s time to join the “Search Party.” This show starts as a quirky missing-persons mystery but quickly evolves into something much darker, weirder, and more unpredictable. The premise? A group of self-absorbed Brooklyn hipsters becomes obsessed with tracking down a college acquaintance who has vanished. What starts as an innocent amateur investigation spirals into full-blown crime, deception, and murder - all while keeping its humor and social satire. Every season takes bigger, crazier swings, but the cast (led by the hilarious Alia Shawkat) keeps it all grounded. It’s a solid mix of mystery, comedy, and absolute chaos, making it one of the most unique murder mystery shows on Max.
