Why ‘A Minecraft Movie’ is still the most underrated comedy movie on HBO Max
Why ‘A Minecraft Movie’ is still the most underrated comedy movie on HBO Max
It made people laugh in theaters (including me), and it’s even better at home.
I think it’s fair to say that when most people talk about HBO Max, comedy movies are rarely the first thing that comes up. The platform is known for prestige TV, action and drama movies, and anything from the DC Universe. Which is exactly why I was so thrilled to see this movie land here. Tara and I went to see “A Minecraft Movie” in theaters the weekend it came out, and it ended up being one of the most fun movies we saw all year. We walked out smiling and genuinely surprised by how much it worked. Then it quietly landed on HBO Max, and despite how massive it was in theaters, it somehow already feels overlooked. If you’re in the mood for a comedy that’s silly, big-hearted, and way more entertaining than some of the critic chatter around it suggests, this is the one I keep telling people to hit play on.
Best under-the-radar comedy movie on HBO Max
Why ‘A Minecraft Movie’ is the most underrated comedy movie on HBO Max
“A Minecraft Movie” is easily one of my top three movies of the year so far. And that’s coming from someone who went in expecting a perfectly fine, disposable video-game adaptation. Instead, we got a movie that fully understands what it is and leans into it. It’s funny, chaotic, visually playful, and completely committed to being a big, joyful family comedy. Anyone who actually saw this movie knows how much fun it is.
The disconnect is wild. Critics were pretty mixed on it, mostly dinging the movie for its simple story and safe structure. Meanwhile, audiences had an absolute blast. You can see it in the reactions, the audience scores, and the word of mouth. This is one of those movies where you hear people say, yeah, the plot’s basic, but who cares, I was laughing the whole time. And honestly, that’s the whole point. This movie delivers entertainment in a way that a lot of bigger, more “serious” movies don’t.
A huge part of why it works is that it never tries to be something it’s not. The story is straightforward on purpose. A group of misfits gets dropped into the Minecraft world, teams up with Steve, and has to survive long enough to find their way home. That’s it. No fake depth. No forced emotional arcs. Just a clean setup that gives the movie room to do what it does best, which is play. The humor comes from contrast, escalation, and letting the absurdity of the world collide with very human reactions.
Jason Momoa is especially great here. Casting him as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, a loud, washed-up tough guy completely out of his depth, is inspired. He commits fully to being ridiculous, and the movie gets a ton of laughs out of watching this massive action-hero type absolutely crumble in a pixelated universe. Jack Black, as Steve, is exactly what you want him to be. Over-the-top. Earnest. Singing about crafting tools like it’s the most important thing in the world. The two of them together have real comedic chemistry, and the movie is smart enough to just let them riff.
This is also where the critics vs audience split really matters. If you went into this movie hoping for something elevated, you probably walked out disappointed. If you went in ready to have a good time, it’s a blast. It’s packed with visual gags, game references that actually land, and moments that play just as well for adults as they do for kids. Tara and I laughed the entire way through, and judging by the crowd reactions, we were not alone. This movie understands that comedy is about momentum and commitment, not perfection.
Jared Hess’s direction is a big reason the tone works. His offbeat sensibility is all over this thing, from the deadpan reactions to the slightly dorky humor that sneaks up on you. It’s not trying to be slick or ironic. It’s confident in its weirdness, which makes the jokes hit harder. That confidence is probably why audiences connected with it so strongly, even when critics stayed on the fence.

Four misfits find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve.
What is ‘A Minecraft Movie’ about?
At its core, “A Minecraft Movie” is about a group of ordinary people getting dropped into a world that runs on creativity and improvisation. Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn are all dealing with their own real-world frustrations when they’re suddenly pulled through a portal into the blocky Minecraft universe. There, they meet Steve, an eccentric master crafter who teaches them how this world works, whether they’re ready or not.
Survival in the Overworld isn’t about strength or dominance. It’s about learning, building, and working together. As the group fends off zombies, Piglins, and other familiar threats from the game, the movie uses the mechanics of Minecraft as both plot engine and punchline. Crafting becomes comedy. Trial and error becomes character growth. And what starts as a simple quest slowly turns into a story about embracing creativity, trusting others, and not being afraid to look a little ridiculous while figuring things out. It’s light, fast-moving, and never forgets that it’s supposed to be fun.

Other underappreciated comedy movies on HBO Max
If “A Minecraft Movie” works for you and you want to keep that energy going, HBO Max has a few other under-the-radar picks worth checking out. “Mickey 17” is a dark sci-fi comedy about a disposable worker on a space colony who keeps getting cloned every time he dies, which slowly turns into a very strange identity crisis. “Death of a Unicorn” is a dark fantasy comedy where a dad and daughter accidentally hit a unicorn on the way to a billionaire retreat, and everything spirals once the ultra-rich realize the creature might have miraculous healing powers. And “Mountainhead” follows four billionaire friends holed up on a secluded mountain getaway while the world outside starts falling apart, turning their casual hang into something quietly uncomfortable and very funny. Happy watching!
