Looking for free thrills on The Roku Channel? Watch ‘Colony’
The overlooked sci-fi thriller turns an alien invasion into a tense story about family, survival, and impossible choices.
The best thing about the streaming era is that overlooked, older shows can get a second life just by landing in the right place. And “Colony” is one of those shows that feels like it got lost in the shuffle for no good reason. It has a killer hook, a strong cast, and the kind of paranoid, slowly tightening story that makes you start side-eyeing every character after about 20 minutes. The setup is simple enough: aliens have taken over Earth, Los Angeles is trapped behind a massive wall, and one family is trying to survive while getting pulled between the occupation and the Resistance. But the show is way more interesting than just “aliens invaded.” It’s about collaboration, rebellion, marriage, parenting, fear, and all the awful little compromises people make when the world has gone completely sideways. So, if you’re looking for the best under-the-radar thriller TV show on The Roku Channel, this is the one I’d start with.

Why ‘Colony’ is the most underrated thriller series on The Roku Channel
If you’re into thrillers that build pressure slowly instead of just throwing action at you, “Colony” is absolutely worth your time. The show takes place after an alien invasion, but it doesn’t open with some giant CGI war in the sky. Instead, it drops you into occupied Los Angeles, where people are watched, controlled, rationed, separated, and forced to live under a system they don’t fully understand. That’s way creepier, honestly. The aliens are mostly off-screen at first, which makes them feel even more powerful. You’re not scared because you see everything — you’re scared because nobody really knows what’s happening.
The whole thing works because the central conflict is brutally personal. Will Bowman, played by Josh Holloway, is a former FBI agent and Army Ranger who gets pushed into working for the occupation’s human collaborators so he can protect his family. Meanwhile, his wife Katie, played by Sarah Wayne Callies, is secretly helping the Resistance. So right away, the show turns a marriage into a spy thriller. They love each other, but they’re also hiding huge things from each other. And because they have kids, the stakes never feel abstract. This isn’t just “fight the aliens.” It’s “how much of yourself would you give up to keep your family alive?”
That’s what makes “Colony” more interesting than a lot of dystopian shows. It’s not built around easy heroes and obvious villains. The collaborators are awful, sure, but some of them are also scared, practical, ambitious, or convinced they’re preventing something worse. The Resistance isn’t clean either. Everyone is making ugly choices under pressure, and that moral gray zone is where the show gets really good. Peter Jacobson is especially great as Snyder, a slippery political survivor who somehow manages to be pathetic, funny, dangerous, and weirdly useful all at once. Tory Kittles also gives the show a tougher edge as Broussard, a Resistance fighter who brings real danger into the story whenever he shows up.
One reason “Colony” still feels under-the-radar is that it never got the huge cultural moment it deserved. It aired on USA Network from 2016 to 2018, got solid reviews, built a loyal fanbase, and then ended after three seasons. It also probably hurt that the show sounds like a big alien-invasion series, when it’s actually more of a grounded occupation thriller. If someone went in expecting nonstop spaceships and battles, they might’ve missed what the show was really doing.
And yes, fair warning, “Colony” was canceled after Season 3, so the ending leaves some big threads hanging. That’s annoying — no way around it. But I don’t think it ruins the ride, because the show gives you three full seasons of tense, character-driven thriller storytelling before it gets there. The world keeps expanding, the Bowmans keep getting pushed into worse situations, and the story grows from a sealed-off Los Angeles mystery into something much bigger. If you like shows about surveillance, resistance, propaganda, family loyalty, and people trying to stay human inside a brutal system, “Colony” is exactly the kind of show free streaming is great for.
Colony
In the near future a family must make difficult decisions as they balance staying together with trying to survive. They live in Los Angeles, which has been occupied by a force of outside intruders. While some people have chosen to collaborate with the authorities and benefit from the new order, others have rebelled — and suffer the consequences.
What is ‘Colony’ about?
“Colony” follows the Bowman family after Earth has been taken over by mysterious alien occupiers known as the Hosts. Los Angeles has been turned into a walled-off colony, with human collaborators enforcing the new order through checkpoints, surveillance, raids, and threats of forced labor. Will Bowman is pulled into working for the occupation to protect his family, while his wife Katie secretly joins the Resistance, putting them on opposite sides of the same fight without fully knowing it. What starts as a survival story inside one occupied city slowly grows into a bigger thriller about rebellion, hidden agendas, alien power struggles, and the terrifying question of whether humanity has any real control over its own future.

Other underappreciated thriller TV shows on The Roku Channel
If you’re into “Colony” and want more underrated thrillers on The Roku Channel, there are a few good next stops. Start with “Haven,” which leans more supernatural mystery than dystopian thriller, but has that same “what is really going on in this town?” pull. Then try “Hemlock Grove,” which is messier, bloodier, and much weirder, but scratches the itch for dark secrets, strange experiments, and a town where everyone seems to be hiding something. And if you want something colder and more grounded, go with “The Fall,” a psychological crime thriller with Gillian Anderson hunting a serial killer played by Jamie Dornan. Different flavor, same “I need to know what happens next” energy.
