When will ‘The Toxic Avenger’ ooze its way to streaming?

When will ‘The Toxic Avenger’ ooze its way to streaming?

Fans have been waiting a long time for the wide release of ‘The Toxic Avengers,’ and it’s finally in theaters on Aug. 29.

“The Toxic Avenger” first made its world premiere way back at Fantastic Fest in September 2023. Almost two full years later, the movie is finally getting a wide release in theaters in the United States. Fans can head to their local cinema starting Friday, Aug. 29 to see “The Toxic Avenger” in all its gooey glory, but when do we think you’ll be able to stream it at home? We’ll give you our full prediction below.

Key Details:

  • Ghoulishly good?: “The Toxic Avenger” has an 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Universe of options: Cineverse is distributing the film, which makes its streaming destination harder to predict.
  • Another long wait?: It’s a good bet that the movie won’t be available to stream with a subscription quickly.

“The Toxic Avenger” stars Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a janitor who isn’t exactly winning at life. After a freak accident, he is transformed into the horrific mutant vigilante the Toxic Avenger. With his trusty mop in hand, Toxie battles his way through freaks, criminals, and even corrupt CEOs, all while trying to reach a son in a relationship that was strained long before the accident.

“The Toxic Avenger” features a low-key fantastic cast, including Jacob Tremblay as Wade Gooze, Kevin Bacon as corrupt businessman Bob Garbinger, and Elijah Wood as the creepy Fritz Garbinger. It’s received an 83% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers saying that the movie may not be for everyone —- it is unrated, after all — but it’s an incredibly gory and silly good time at the cinema.

When will ‘The Toxic Avenger’ be streaming?

There are a couple of pertinent questions about “The Toxic Avenger” when it comes to a streaming debut. First, we’re not 100% certain where the movie will stream; it’s distributed by Cineverse, which does have its own streaming service, as well as the Screambox platform to put “The Toxic Avenger” on when it’s done in theaters. That’s the most likely outcome, but it would hardly be a surprise to see a Netflix or an HBO Max swoop in with a big licensing offer if the movie is a hit in theaters.

I’d imagine whichever streaming service gets it will have to wait a while, however. “The Toxic Avenger” is exactly the type of movie that gets a long theatrical release, as well as a considerable period in which it’s only available to stream on transactional video-on-demand platforms like Prime Video that will make you rent or buy it. “Terrifier 3” from Cineverse took over 120 days to stream after arriving in theaters in Oct. 2024.

I’ll use the same 126-day window to predict that “The Toxic Avenger” will stream on Cineverse or Screambox starting on Friday, Jan. 2. It’ll be a bloody, oozy way to ring in the new year, and people will have plenty of time off for the holidays to enjoy it in all its toxic glory.

Cineverse

Cineverse is a free ad-supported video-on-demand service featuring 19,000+ films and TV series. The library includes content from sianCrush, Bloody Disgusting, The Bob Ross Channel, The Country Channel, CONtv, CONtv Anime, Crime Hunters, Docurama, The Dove Channel, The Elvis Presley Channel, Fandor, and Screambox. Subscribers can go ad-free for $2.99/month.

…

Alongside the VOD library, Cineverse has several FAST channels with an integrated program guide, allowing users to easily browse between channels and access the genres they love. Depending on your platform, the app may be titled “Cinehouse.”

The service will provide content recommendations based on real-time feedback from viewers.

Cineverse will eventually be available as a channel on Amazon Prime Video with a 7-day free trial for the ad-free version.
