Celebrate Columbus Day with the movies of the other Christopher Columbus
Celebrate Columbus Day with the movies of the other Christopher Columbus
Forget the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria; spend Columbus Day with the Christopher Columbus behind some of the most beloved movies of the past 40 years.
Depending on where you live and which calendar you are looking at, Monday might be Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Columbus Day, or both. And while we have already put together a much more meaningful collection of movies and TV shows worth watching to mark Indigenous Peoples Day, as a native of the largest city named after Christopher Columbus (Columbus, Ohio), there is no way I could let the day go by without honoring an individual whose legacy has dramatically impacted the lives of nearly everyone living in America.
I am, of course, talking about director and screenwriter Chris Columbus.
No, he did not sail the ocean blue in 1492, but he did send Kevin McCallister to New York, introduce movie audiences to Hogwarts, turn Robin Williams into Mrs. Doubtfire, and somehow convince the world that Adam Sandler fighting Pac-Man was a perfectly reasonable summer blockbuster. So, if you would rather celebrate Columbus Day with “Home Alone,” “Harry Potter,” and a little movie nostalgia, here is where you can stream the films of the significantly less controversial Christopher Columbus.
How to watch every Chris Columbus movie
Every movie directed by Chris Columbus
Columbus has spent nearly four decades bouncing between family comedies, sentimental dramas, fantasy adventures, musicals, and the occasional movie in which giant versions of 1980s arcade characters attack major world cities. The results have not always been universally successful, but the high points include some of the most beloved family movies of the past 40 years.

- Heartbreak Hotel (1988)
- Home Alone (1990)

- Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
- Nine Months (1995)
- Stepmom (1998)
- Bicentennial Man (1999)

Classic movies written by Christopher Columbus
But wait, Chris Columbus made “The Goonies” too, right? Sort of. Before Columbus became a director, he was already responsible for several movies that would become fixtures of 1980s childhoods. He wrote “Gremlins,” “The Goonies,” and “Young Sherlock Holmes,” but directors Joe Dante, Richard Donner, and Barry Levinson, respectively, were the ones behind the camera.
So, if 17 Chris Columbus-directed movies somehow aren’t enough Columbus for your Columbus Day, you can expand the marathon with some of his best-known screenwriting credits as well.
- Reckless (1984)
- Gremlins (1984)
- The Goonies (1985)
- Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)
- Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (1989)
- Christmas With the Kranks (2004)
Movies about that other Christopher Columbus
Of course, maybe all of this talk about the more culturally important Chris Columbus has only made you curious about his explorer namesake. Hollywood has taken more than a few swings at dramatizing his life over the years, although the results are very much products of their eras and often come with substantial historical baggage of their own.
- Christopher Columbus (1949)
- Christopher Columbus (1985)
