Which premium audio formats does HBO Max offer?
We took a look at which premium audio features are available on HBO Max, and we’ll explain how to use them!
Quality has been the hallmark of the HBO brand since its inception, and it’s still what Warner Bros. Discovery strives for when it creates a new piece of content to be shown on HBO platforms. That includes HBO Max, which can be counted on for several major hit TV shows each year, even if it has a few misses in between.
When one of those hits comes along, however, it’s best to be able to watch HBO Max in the best audio quality possible. With that in mind, we’ll explain more about the premium audio formats available on HBO Max and how to use them here.
What you need to know about premium audio formats on HBO Max
Which premium audio formats are available on HBO Max?
HBO Max has the same two premium audio formats that most streaming services share: 5.1 surround sound on a large selection of titles, and Dolby Atmos on a smaller selection of premium TV shows and movies throughout its catalog.
Which plans can use premium audio on HBO Max?
Ad-supported HBO Max customers can hear a wide range of titles in 5.1 surround sound on HBO Max, as can viewers on the ad-free Standard plan. Only customers of the HBO Max Premium plan have access to Dolby Atmos on select titles — HBO Max Premium costs $23 per month, or $230 per year.
How do you turn on premium audio with HBO Max?
The good news here is that, as with most other streaming services, HBO Max will automatically detect the best sound quality your speakers or connected soundbar are capable of producing. The title you select will stream in the highest quality sound possible, without your needing to adjust any settings.
