T-Mobile has taken over Metronet; what you need to know
T-Mobile has taken over Metronet; what you need to know
The move will allow T-Mobile to rapidly expand the number of homes in which it offers fiber internet plans.
There are lots of advantages to having a T-Mobile Fiber Home Internet plan, but there is one drawback to these plans: they aren’t available as widely as other T-Mobile Home Internet subscriptions. Fiber internet requires a different infrastructure to deliver such high speeds, such as fiber-optic cables that can offer much higher speeds than cable or satellite-based internet.
In October, T-Mobile finalized a deal to team with the investment firm KKR for a takeover of Metronet, a formerly independent direct-to-home fiber internet company. That will help it continue to build out its fiber home internet availability, and we’ll give you all the details you need to know about the takeover here.

Get started nowWhat does the takeover mean for Metronet customers?
Metronet subscribers will see their plan continue to operate in much the same fashion as it did before the T-Mobile takeover. There will be changes in the billing arrangements; however, now Metronet subscribers will be billed directly by T-Mobile for their internet service.
T-Mobile will also handle customer service for Metronet, and all plans from the company will now be sold to new customers by T-Mobile itself. Existing Metronet subscribers could be able to bundle their internet plans with voice lines, and new subscribers will get benefits like a five-year price guarantee (exclusions like taxes and fees apply), T-Mobile Tuesdays perks, and more.
How much do T-Mobile Fiber Internet plans cost?
After the takeover of Metronet, there are now four Fiber Home Internet plans available from T-Mobile. Check out how much these plans cost in the table below.
| Plan | Speed | Price with Autopay | Price without Autopay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiber 500 Mbps | Up to 500 Mbps | $55 per month (w/ active postpaid voice line) | $75 per month |
| Fiber 1 Gig | Up to 1 Gig | $65 per month (w/ active postpaid voice line) | $85 per month |
| Fiber 2 Gig | Up to 2 Gigs | $85 per month (w/ active postpaid voice line) | $105 per month |
| Fiber Founders Club 2 Gig | Up to 2 Gigs | $70 per month | $80 per month |
Do you have to bundle a T-Mobile Fiber Internet plan with a voice plan?
Just because T-Mobile first made a name for itself as a wireless provider doesn’t mean it will force you to sign up for a voice line with your Fiber Home Internet plan. As long as T-Mobile Fiber is available in your area, you can choose to bundle it with a voice line or not — though as you can see above, doing so comes with a discount on many T-Mobile Fiber Home Internet plans.
What are the perks of a T-Mobile Fiber Home Internet plan?
T-Mobile’s Fiber Home Internet plans include a free Wi-Fi gateway with equipment fees and installation fees included. Each plan also comes with unlimited data, and the T-Mobile Tuesdays perks program, which comes with exclusive discounts such as a free year of MLB.TV.
These plans also come with blazing-fast speeds, so you’ll be able to stream high-definition video, flat-rate pricing, and a price guarantee that ensures you know how much you’re going to be paying for your internet, with no surprise fees or forced add-ons that jack up the price of your bill.
What if T-Mobile Fiber Home Internet isn’t available where you live?
If T-Mobile Fiber Home Internet plans aren’t available where you live yet, just have a little patience! The acquisition of Metronet is specifically intended to help T-Mobile spread its fiber wings more quickly. Metronet will continue to help build the infrastructure of T-Mobile’s fiber internet, allowing it to become available in millions of new homes over the next five years.
Metronet also has access to 2.6 million homes, so you may now have access to fiber internet through T-Mobile even if you didn’t before! Check the availability of T-Mobile Fiber Home Internet plans to see if you can get it in your home here.
Is Metronet still available as its own brand?
No, Metronet will no longer be sold as its own brand any longer. Customers who want to sign up for a Metronet plan will have to go through T-Mobile, which is the only point of sale for Metronet fiber internet services going forward. The good news is, T-Mobile’s website and customer service make it easy to sign up for fiber internet if it’s found in your area.
