Sling TV’s owner DISH files for bankruptcy
Sling TV’s owner DISH files for bankruptcy
The company plans to continue with an attempted restructuring agreement after filing Chapter 11 protections.
A move that has looked likely for many months is finally coming to pass. The satellite TV company DISH, which also owns the live TV streaming service Sling TV, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The decision has been a long time coming and reflects the continued fragility of the pay-TV marketplace.
Key Details:
- Cleaned out: Sling TV’s parent company DISH has filed for bankruptcy.
- What’s the holdup?: A delay in the sale of $20 billion in spectrum assets to AT&T has played a significant role in the filing.
- Carry on: EchoStar says brands, customers, and operations will not be affected by bankruptcy.
DISH CEO Charlie Ergen has been doing his best to stave off bankruptcy for the company for some time DISH raised public concerns about its ability to remain a going concern as far back as early 2024, but there have been more recent signs that the company was in some financial distress.
Last summer, DISH’s parent company, EchoStar, was able to come up with the cash to make a debt payment that held off Chapter 11 proceedings once again. But it was a close thing, and now DISH has apparently run out of options
A $20 billion deal to sell some of its spectrum assets to AT&T was supposed to help DISH avoid filing for bankruptcy, but the agreement has been held up by “unforeseen delays,” EchoStar said. Once that transaction is closed, EchoStar says it will be able to pay off most of its debt.
EchoStar also says its “brands, customers, operations, and employees will not be affected” by the filing. It expects DISH to emerge from bankruptcy during the July-to-September quarter, and once that happens, it will be “stronger and better able to take advantage of future opportunities.”
So, there doesn’t appear to be any plan to dissolve assets like Sling TV, or sell the streamer off to the highest bidder — at least for now. But if bankruptcy proceedings for DISH drag on longer than intended, it may prompt more drastic measures from EchoStar. The company has been working hard to pivot toward wireless telecom operations, but the expense of that process has been immense.
