Disney+ looking to develop more British TV

Disney+ looking to develop more British TV

A Disney+ executive confirmed the streamer will look across the pond more often for new content — especially comedies.

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.
Disney+ is looking to develop more British comedies, an executive confirmed.

British comedy is a beloved subgenre in many parts of the world, including the United States. Fans can, and frequently do, look back fondly on such British classics as “Black Books,” “Keeping Up Appearances,” as well as enjoy newer entries into the canon such as “Fleabag” and hundreds more. Disney+ thinks it’s high time to revitalize the love for British comedy in the United States, as one of its top executives said on Wednesday morning.

Key Details:

  • British invasion: Disney+ is planning to start developing more British comedies.
  • Laughs and more: The streamer is developing several drama series in the United Kingdom as well.
  • More global titles: Disney executives have spoken of the need to develop more titles globally going forward.

President of Disney TV Studios and Global Original Television Strategy at Disney Entertainment, Eric Schrier, took the stage at Content London on Wednesday to talk about the future of British television shows on the streaming service.

Schrier confirmed that Disney+ is looking to develop more comedies from the United Kingdom currently. He spoke about the creation of more comedy shows in the context of the extremely serious flavor of global discourse at the current moment, saying, “We think the world can use some comedy right now.”

There are British drama series in development at Disney+ as well, including limited series and those meant to run for multiple seasons. But Schrier was more eager to talk comedy, the development of which he said “has not been a trend of late.”

Disney is looking to develop even more content outside the United States, as Disney CEO Bob Iger explained earlier this year. Iger has told investors that his company is already starting to develop more aggressively in very, very targeted markets outside the United States,” apparently including the U.K.

Fans can stream the British comedy series “Rivals” on Disney+, and enjoy the new comedy-drama “Alice & Steve” when it premieres sometime in 2026. There’s more where that came from as well, as Disney is officially developing or planning to develop more British comedy titles in the future.

Disney+ most recently raised prices on September 23, 2026 — the fourth time in as many years.

The app supports unlimited downloads (on their Premium Plans), four simultaneous streamers, up to 7 profiles, 4K streaming, and includes hundreds of avatars.

The service includes 25+ original series, 10+ original movies, 7,500 past episodes, 100 recent movies, and 400 library titles, including the entire Disney Vault.
