Disney+ announces new, YouTube-like feature coming to app
The Disney+ app for mobile users will soon feature a vertical video feed for fans to scroll through.
Paid streaming services are all trying to learn the same lesson in 2026: how to compete with YouTube. Month after month, ratings from Nielsen show that YouTube attracts far more viewership each month than services like Netflix or Disney+ do, and these platforms aren’t going to allow that to continue unabated. Disney+ is the latest streamer to announce tactics for grappling with YouTube’s dominance, and its next idea is to borrow a wildly popular feature from YouTube itself.
Key Details:
- Stand tall: Disney+ is preparing to launch a new vertical video feed.
- Join the club: The new ESPN streaming service also launched with vertical video last August.
- Unoriginal idea: Netflix has also begun testing vertical video.

On Wednesday, Disney announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that it was gearing up to roll out a vertical video feed on Disney+. The feed will become available on the Disney+ app for mobile devices at some point in 2026, although the exact content included in the feed has not been explicitly disclosed.
There appear to be a variety of options, however. In an interview with Deadline, EVP of product management for Disney Entertainment and ESPN Erin Teague said “everything is on the table” for the feed, including original short-form programming, or repurposed social video clips.
The move is designed to help Disney+ continue increasing engagement on its platform, and the company has experience in using this particular feature toward that end. When the new ESPN direct-to-consumer service launched back in August, it also included a vertical video offering.
Netflix has also experimented with vertical video to help increase engagement metrics. Expect more streamers to continue trying out vertical video options, as streamers try to woo audiences who are more likely to use social video platforms like YouTube or TikTok than they are to spend hours with an on-demand streamer.
This is what Gen Z and Gen Alpha are expecting,” Teague explained to Deadline. “They are not necessarily thinking about sitting down, watching a long-form, two-and-a-half-hour piece of content on their phones.”
