Sling TV loses another 109,000 subscribers in Q2 2025
The live TV streamer and its parent company EchoStar seemed destined for bankruptcy.
Sling TV and its parent company, EchoStar, face a future of uncertainty. That was the takeaway from the company’s earnings report for the second quarter of 2025, which EchoStar shared on Friday. The report shows that EchoStar’s pay-TV segments, DISH and Sling TV, lost customers once again, and that revenue is continuing to decline from that division of the company as well.
Key Details:
- Subscriber slips: EchoStar lost a combined 289,000 pay-TV subscribers in Q2.
- Revenue, too: Pay-TV revenue for EchoStar dipped 8% in the quarter.
- Wireless to the rescue?: The company’s efforts to launch a wireless business could be too late.
EchoStar had a combined 7.11 million pay-TV subscribers at the end of the second quarter; at the end of Q1, it claimed 7.4 million. According to data from StreamTV Insider, Sling TV dropped 109,000 subscribers in the second quarter, and DISH Network lost another 180,000 viewers — totaling 3.9% of EchoStar’s entire pay-TV subscriber base.
Sling TV now has 1.78 million subscribers. While average revenue per user (ARPU) from pay-TV customers rose 3% during the quarter, total pay-TV revenue fell 8% in Q2, dropping to $2.46 billion overall. In slightly better news, the company saw a churn rate of just 1.29% during the quarter.
Net losses for the company were $306 million, an increase of around $100 million from the year-ago quarter. EchoStar is counting on its Boost Mobile wireless business to help bring it back to better financial health, and that division of the company added 212,000 customers in the quarter.
Capital expenditures of over $746 million exceeded the expected amount of $245 million by a wide margin. In short, the company is burning through cash, and its latest earnings report shows that it doesn’t have much to show for those investments just yet. To make matters worse, EchoStar has to contend with interest from the FCC, which is reviewing EchoStar’s compliance with guidelines for establishing a 5G network.
The company has already considered a bankruptcy declaration, and there’s not much in EchoStar’s recent earnings report that would point to a diversion from that course of action. EchoStar could be the next media domino to fall in an atmosphere where entertainment companies saddled with big linear TV businesses are having difficulties moving forward under the old rules of operation.
