Official name of new ESPN streaming service has been revealed
According to Alex Sherman of CNBC, ESPN will call its new forthcoming streamer…’ESPN.’
When Alex Sherman of CNBC reports a scoop in the entertainment news world, you can take it to the bank. Sherman dropped another of his signature breaking stories on Friday, when he announced that the new ESPN streaming service — which had been referred to by ESPN and Disney officials by its working title Flagship for many months — has settled on an official moniker. It’s one fans will be eminently familiar with.
Key Details:
- Meet ESPN: The new ESPN streaming service will be called simply “ESPN.”
- More or less confusing?: Sherman reports the simplified name is intended to cut down on customer confusion.
- More details soon: The price of ESPN is due to be revealed early next week.
Say goodbye to Flagship, and hello to “ESPN.” According to Sherman, that’s the name Disney has settled on for its new sports streaming service. The official name announcement is coming ahead of Disney’s upfront presentation next week.
According to sources familiar with the matter who spoke with Sherman, Disney and ESPN executives decided to use the simplified name to avoid confusing consumers who are already inundated with streaming choices — especially since there’s already an ESPN streaming service in ESPN+.
More details about the ESPN streaming service will be available soon. Disney will reveal the streamer’s price at the same time as it officially announces ESPN as its moniker, though previous reports have indicated the cost will be somewhere between $25 and $30 per month.
Simply sticking with “ESPN” as the service’s name was not one of the predictions The Streamable made about what it would eventually be called. We were, however, correct in our assumption that the ESPN brand would be a prominent part of the name. Turns out, it’s the only part of the name.
ESPN will launch ahead of the 2025 NFL and college football seasons. Expect Disney to reveal more details about the streamer and the totality of its offerings as we get closer to launch.
